L.F. Ivanhoe was a geophysicist and a petroleum engineer. He graduated with a B.S. (1942) and a Professional Degree (1947), both in Mining Engineering from the South Dakota School of Mines. He earned his M.S in Geology from Stanford University in 1949 , and completed courses in Oceanography at Scripps Institution, University of California at San Diego.
